Skunk spray is among the most intense odors you will encounter in a residential wildlife situation. The spray itself is a mixture of sulfur-containing compounds called thiols, the same chemical family responsible for the smell of garlic and onions, but far more concentrated. A single spray event under a deck or near a crawlspace vent can permeate an entire home and linger for days without treatment. Knowing which remedies work and which do not saves time, money, and frustration.
What Actually Works
Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda Solution
The most chemically effective deodorizer for skunk spray is a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. This combination oxidizes the thiol compounds, neutralizing the odor at a molecular level rather than just masking it. Apply it to affected surfaces, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, and rinse. Do not store this solution in a sealed container, it generates gas and will burst a closed bottle. Make it fresh as needed.
Commercial Enzyme Deodorizers
Professional-grade enzyme-based deodorizers break down organic compounds chemically and are effective for treating floors, subflooring, crawlspace surfaces, and fabric that has absorbed odor. These are available through wildlife supply retailers and are the products used for professional cleanup jobs.
Air Exchange and Ventilation
Open windows and use fans to exchange interior air continuously for 12 to 24 hours. Close crawlspace vents temporarily if the spray source was below the foundation, or seal the gap the skunk was using so odor cannot continue entering.
What Does Not Work
Tomato juice does not neutralize skunk spray. This is a persistent myth. It creates a masking odor temporarily while the thiol compounds remain. Air freshener sprays similarly mask rather than neutralize. Vinegar dilutes in the air but does not chemically neutralize thiols effectively.
Skunk Spray Inside the Home
If a skunk has sprayed directly beneath a crawlspace vent or foundation gap, the odor can enter the home continuously until the access point is sealed and the spray source is treated. Wash all fabrics that have absorbed odor (bedding, upholstery, clothing) with enzyme laundry detergent. Hard surfaces can be wiped with the hydrogen peroxide solution. Activated charcoal placed in bowls throughout the home will absorb residual odor from the air over several days.
Address the Source
Odor treatment is a temporary fix if the skunk is still present. Live trapping and installation of a buried hardware cloth barrier around the perimeter of the structure is the permanent solution. Until the skunk is removed and the den site is excavation-proofed, spray events can recur.
