Snakes found inside WNC homes rarely entered by any route that was specifically sized for a snake. They use the same gaps and cracks that mice, lizards, and insects use, and they enter for the same reasons: following prey, seeking temperature regulation, or discovering that the interior of a structure is more hospitable than the outdoors at that moment. Understanding the entry pathways is the first step toward preventing future encounters.
Foundation Cracks and Gaps
Poured concrete foundations develop cracks over time, particularly in the freeze-thaw cycles common in WNC mountain elevations. Block foundations have mortar joints that can deteriorate, leaving gaps between blocks. Any crack or gap larger than a pencil can admit a small to medium snake. Inspect the foundation perimeter at grade level, gaps tend to concentrate where pipes and utility conduits penetrate the foundation.
Crawlspace Vent Openings
Traditional crawlspace vents with wire screens are a common snake entry point. Screens deteriorate, rust, or are damaged by freeze-thaw movement, leaving gaps. A rat snake or corn snake can enter through a surprisingly small screening gap. Inspect all crawlspace vents for intact screen contact with the frame around the full perimeter.
Garage Door Gaps
The gap under a garage door is often the most significant uncontrolled opening at ground level. Most garage door bottom seals allow a 1/2- to 1-inch gap to the concrete surface, easily large enough for most snake species. Replace worn or collapsed door bottom seals and check that the seal makes full contact with the concrete across the entire width of the door.
Utility Penetrations
Where HVAC lines, electrical conduit, plumbing, and gas lines enter the foundation or sill, gaps typically exist between the pipe and the surrounding material. These are common snake entry points, particularly for smaller species. Seal with hydraulic cement for masonry gaps, expanding foam backed with wire mesh for wood framing gaps.
Doors and Windows at Grade
Sliding glass doors and French doors at grade level with worn or missing door sweeps are a direct entry path. Screen doors with gaps at the base are also commonly used. A door sweep that makes full contact with the threshold closes this entry entirely.
Sill Plate Gaps on Older Homes
Many older WNC mountain homes, built in the 1940s through 1970s, have wood sill plates with gaps at the foundation line that were never fully insulated or sealed. Snakes can enter through these gaps from the crawlspace into the wall cavity and eventually into the living space. An inspection of the crawlspace perimeter identifies these gaps for sealing.
